Care

Our brass cable entries are manufactured in solid brass — polished or aged — and our aluminium entries in solid aluminium. Brass finishes are live finishes, meaning natural patination will occur over time as the surface reacts to its environment. Each piece will develop a unique appearance, and variations in colour, tone, and texture are to be expected. These natural qualities are part of the charm of solid brass and ensure your piece develops its own beautiful story with use — which means orders placed at different times may not match exactly.

What is a live finish?

A live finish is a surface treatment (often used on metals like brass, bronze, or copper) that isn't sealed with a lacquer or coating. That means the material is left in a more natural state, so the surface will continue to react to its environment — air, humidity, oils from skin, cleaning products, even sunlight. Over time, the finish will darken, lighten, spot, or develop a patina, giving it a unique look that changes with use.

Plinko polished brass and aged brass are live finishes on solid metal — not plating on zinc. Aged brass starts with a deeper intentional patina; polished brass starts brighter and quiets with use. Aluminium is solid throughout as well, but stays cooler in tone and does not brown the way brass does.

Care notes

  • Brass is a soft metal and is prone to scratching. Handle with care to avoid surface damage.
  • To protect the finish, avoid touching the surface with bare fingers as natural oils can leave marks or accelerate uneven patina.
  • Variations are not considered faults; they are an inherent characteristic of solid brass and contribute to the individuality of each piece.
  • Let it age naturally: the finish will change over time. This patina is intentional and part of the character of brass.
  • Consistency matters: if ordering at different times, please note colour and finish will vary due to natural ageing.
  • For day-to-day cleaning, a soft dry cloth is enough. Avoid harsh abrasives, metal polish, and strong cleaners unless you deliberately want to brighten polished brass — that will reset some of the patina.
  • Aluminium can be wiped the same way. It still marks if you abuse it, but it does not develop a brass-style brown patina.

Choosing a finish

Same 60 mm drop-in fit on every finish. See brass vs aluminium for look, weight, and when to specify each. Unsure on a project? Order the sample pair (polished brass + aluminium) first.
